Holbrook Rec Basketball (Grades 3–6)

  • Cost: Free (no charge for families).

  • Who plays: Open to all skill levels. Many players are brand new to basketball.

  • Playing time: Everyone plays about the same amount, no matter their ability.

  • Teams & games:

    • Internal program (we only play against other Holbrook players).

    • Games are usually held Saturdays at Holbrook School.

    • Players typically have one practice or skills session per week.

  • Evaluations: Held to create balanced teams. No cuts—everyone makes a team.

  • Divisions: Depending on registration numbers, divisions may be Boys, Girls, or Co-Ed.

  • Season: Mid–late November through February.

Holbrook Travel Basketball Club (Grades 3-8)

  • Purpose: For athletes ready for more competition and higher-level skill development.

  • Cost: Pay-to-play. Fee for 2025/2026 is $200 and covers league registration, officials, insurance, uniforms, equipment, and sometimes venues.

  • Tryouts: Required every year. Not all players make a team, and spots are not guaranteed from year to year.

  • Playing time: Based on skill, effort, and commitment. Younger teams have some minimum requirements, but older teams may not.

  • Games & travel:

    • Compete in the Eastern Maine Basketball League.

    • Regular season: 10 games + at least 1 playoff game.

    • About 5 home and 5 away games (travel time ranges from 5 minutes to 1.5 hours).

    • Games may be on Saturdays or Sundays.

  • Practices: Usually once per week.

  • Season: November through early February.

Choosing Between Rec and Travel

  • Some players do both programs.

  • Deciding when to move from Rec to Travel can be tough—every child develops at their own pace.

  • Key difference: Rec = fun, instructional, and equal playtime. Travel = more competitive, selective, and advanced.
